Power supply

Dear,

When I use the GPAK with bread board and some discrete components,

I tried without USB cable connected, and connect the VDD pin to power supply, it seems not working.

Do I need to connect the USB cable with GPAK to power up? Or just connnect the VDD pin on GPAK to 5V power supply?

In addition, in GPAK Designer program emluation mode, the LED on advanced board was turned on depending on the output.

Does the LED turn on depending on the output even in practical application?

(I mean using GPAK with other discrete components for experiment, not emulating)

Yes, you must connect and power up USB if you want to test your design on board. Of course, you can separate to socket with the programmed chip and test it on the socket, without using the board.

Regarding the LEDs on board, they are driven by the chip through the buffers. These buffers are enabled by FPGA onboard. In the practical application, we usually program the chip and run it in Test Mode (not Emulation) and you can use some discrete external components. I recommend using EC (expansion connectors) for applying digital signals and TP connectors for analog signals.

What I don't understand yet is that if I want to use GPAK, do I always have to run the GPAK designer program and connect it via USB?

I've already checked the chip is working properly in test mode, then I want to apply GPAK to the actual circuit.

But without GPAK designer program, it doesn't seem to start even if external power is applied to the VDD pin.

I have used the oscilloscope to see whether it's working without the program running or not, no signals were found.

Of course it works with the program running and applying external power to the VDD pin.

The question sounds a little silly. Anyway, Thank you for your help.

Thanks for your question,

After you have programmed the chip with your design, you need neither board nor socket, just solder your chip on the PCB and it will behave according to your design. Don't forget to connect VDD and GND pins to power up the IC.

I don't know why it doesn't work, can you show me your connections? Be sure that the chip is programmed.

There was a misunderstanding

There was a misunderstanding about how it works. I thought the advanced board could also be operated using external power.

If you don't mind may I ask you another question?

In test mode, the state changes depending on the ASM state and the TP pin LED lights up according to the current state.

I unplugged the advanced board and used the socket to test it with my circuit, then I found the chip could not reach the next state.

For example, I set the LED of the initial state(S0) is TP 3, and with input signal 'a' the state changes to the next state(S1) which is TP 4.

In test mode, when the VDD is applied, TP3 lights up, and I applied signal 'a' , then TP4 lights up.

But with the programmed chip inserted in the socket, after the VDD is applied, TP3 actuallys lights up, so I applied signal 'a', but TP4 does not light up.

Does the ASM have any required conditions? Or any other problem that might be happened?

(Of course, it will be very difficult for you to say what the exact problem is without watching the chip.)

If you don't supply the board the LED will not light up. As I told, LEDs are driven through buffers, which are enabled by FPGA. So, if the board is not supplied (FPGA isn't ON) and LED couldn't be driven. If you want to test the IC without board you must use the scope, but not LEDs on board
