HCI mode is only really used

HCI mode is only really used when you want to run the BLE host stack on another microcontroller/processor. For example if you have an application processor running Linux and you want to add BLE capability you would run the DA14581 (or DA14585) in HCI mode.

If you are running in "embedded" mode with the host stack and the application running on the same device then you don't need to use HCI mode.
