What kind of dev kit you have ? Normally the windows will install the drivers of the FTDI for the pro kit. If not you will have to go to the FTDI page download them and install them explictly. Also what do you mean that you can't see the com port ? You go to the device manager and you aren't able to see any new ports in the COM PORT section ? Normally when you plug in the device you should be able to see the new hardware, but you will need the drivers in order to work properly.
The documents that you 've mentioned are the most important, that summarize the functionallity of the new SDK and the hardware usage, besides that it depends on what you are planning to do. Just as an additional document, if you would like to learn a bit more about the sleeping of the 580 you can have a look at the UM-B-006.
