Battery level monitoring design

1.Can you please provide Battery level monitoring reference design for 14583 based design

2. Is it required to add buck booster in battery operated design?

3. Can we make provision of PCB as well as coaxial type antenna in same design and how to do this?

4. In line of site, how much is the distance covered by using PCB type antenna as well as using coaxial type antenna?

Hi prasanth.velliyangiri,

Hi prasanth.velliyangiri,

1. The proximity reporter that is included in the SDK includes the battery profile and all the SDK projects are operating over the 580/581/583 chips.

2. The 580 includes a DCDC buck/boost converter for operating with a alkaline/coin cell battery, please check in the datasheet the power managment section.

3. Most of the reference designs use printed antennas, you can have a look at the expert kit files or the 583 daughter board of the pro kit where the design includes a coaxial antenna. Please check the in the 580 and the 583 option the development kits tab, on the bottom of the webpage there is a .zip file that includes all the schematics, gerbers, BOM etc.

4. The range depends on the antenna implementation, its tuning and matching, further on a printed antenna the radiation pattern will be influenced by the housing, battery, buzzer or other metal parts. In an SMA antenna (the one we use on the expert kit) the range can be up to 15 meters, in a printed antenna if properly implemented the range can be equal or close to the performance of an SMA antenna.

Thanks for reply

Thanks for reply
I have gone power management section of 580. But for coin cell there is no buck boost step-up converter only buck step down converter is supported for coin cell. We are planning to put coin cell CR2032 in our design. so do we need to put external buck boost step up converter in case of coin cell battery?

Hi prasanth.velliyangiri,

Hi prasanth.velliyangiri,

The 580 can operate with a coin cell, under buck mode, you dont need an external converter for the 580 to operate. In case you want to supply other modules you cant use the internal converter (the dcdc is used only for the 580) and you will need an alternate supply.
