Chip antenna for DA14580

Dear support team,

In this post, LC_Dialog said that chip antenna was not recommended for DA14580.

Can you please tell me more about the performance degradation when chip antenna is used with DA14580?
Is communication range/speed reduced?
Is broadcasting signal strength reduced?
How bad is it?

Printed PCB antenna is not possible for my project. Is there any way else to fix this issue?
If there is no way, what would be the best alternative to DA14580 (in term of functionality and cost), which could be used with a chip antenna?

Hi Dang,

Thanks for your question. As mentioned in the previous forum thread, you can use a chip antenna that is designed for a 50 Ohm matching and for 2.4GHz frequency spectrum since you it is not possible to use a printed antenna in your project. The degradation is depended on the chip antenna that will be used.

We have a lot of code examples and improved documentation, and there is also software roadmap support. There is not any software roadmap support for DA14580 product family and SDK5.

Can you please confirm that DA14531 does not have any problem with chip antenna?

I assume performance is the same either printed antenna or chip antenna is used with DA14531?

Hi Dang,

Thanks for accepting my answer. Yes, a chip antenna can be used. In general, every ceramic chip antenna for the 2.4GHz band could be used. However, the antenna selection is closely depended on the board. Different ceramic antennas might have special placement needs : some needs to be mounted on the edge, some needs ground free bottom layer, etc. There is a great variety of 2.4GHz chip antennas available on the market. Please follow the layout guideline in the datasheet and see also theAN-B-075: DA14531 Hardware Guidelinesdocument.
